The brick and the river. Three chedi in a row at Wat Phra Si Sanphet, a sandstone head held in tree roots at Wat Mahathat, the prangs of Wat Chaiwatthanaram after dark, and the markets the longer days reach on the way. Every photograph comes from the operators running the Ayutthaya temple tour trips.

Most of it sits inside the river loop or a short drive from it. Two exceptions stand out. Bang Pa-In Royal Palace is about 20 km south, on the road back to Bangkok. The Maeklong and Damnoen Saduak markets sit the other way entirely, and only the eleven-hour combination days take them in.

Four temples account for most of the photographs. Wat Mahathat holds the Buddha head in the tree roots. Wihan Phra Mongkhon Bophit is the one large hall on the island with a roof still on it. Wat Lokayasutharam lies in open ground with no building around it. And Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon carries the tallest chedi in the city, ringed by seated Buddhas in yellow sashes.
