That distinction matters. A private boat around the historical park shows you the temples from the water they were built beside. A cruise back to Bangkok is a way of spending the tired end of the day on a deck rather than in traffic. Two different products, one word on the label.
Ayutthaya is an island ringed by the Chao Phraya, the Lopburi and the Pa Sak. Seeing it from a boat is not a novelty leg. It is the shape the place was built to be read in, and ten minutes on the water is all it takes for that to land.
The sunset circuit reaches the water as the light drops. That is the hour Wat Chaiwatthanaram was built for on its west bank, and it is the one photograph most day trippers go home without.
By four o'clock you will have walked a great deal of uneven ground in the heat. An hour on a boat at that point is worth more than another temple.

If the temples are the whole point and your time is short, a road-only day gives you more of them. If you want the day to have a shape rather than a checklist, the water is what provides it.

Book the sunset circuit further ahead than the others. The timing is what people want and there are not many of them. The wet season from August to October puts the rivers at their highest, which is when the water is most impressive — and when a heavy year is worth checking on.
